Five ways to style a Moroccan pouf

Classic brown Moroccan pouf on a light wood floor beside a white sofa

The pouf is the most versatile piece in a Moroccan home. It moves from room to room, changes role through the day and adds instant texture wherever it lands. Here are five ways to put one to work.

1. Pull up an extra seat

Keep a pouf beside the sofa or tucked under a console, ready to pull up when friends arrive. A round pouf is the easiest to move; a cube pouf sits neatly against a wall.

2. Put your feet up

Placed in front of an armchair, a pouf becomes a footrest that makes a reading corner feel complete. Choose a colour that echoes something nearby — a cushion, a throw or the frame of a painting.

3. Make it a low table

Add a wide tray and a pouf becomes a low table for mint tea, books or a candle. It's an especially good idea in small living rooms, where a soft edge is kinder than a hard corner.

4. Group colours together

Two or three poufs in complementary colours — cognac with blue, or black with camel — create a relaxed, collected look. Vary the shapes for interest: a round pouf beside a cube, for example.

5. Let it stand alone

A classic stitched pouf, with its radiating panels and central medallion, is decorative enough to be displayed on its own: at the foot of a staircase, in a hallway or beside a fireplace.
