The case for a hanging headboard

A headboard frames the bed and gives a bedroom its sense of proportion. A hanging headboard does the same job with a lighter touch — and it brings a few advantages of its own.

It works with the bed you have

Because a hanging headboard sits on the wall rather than on the bed, it pairs easily with a simple platform bed, a divan or even a mattress on a low base.

You choose the height

Designs with buckled straps let you set the cushion exactly where you want it: low and cosy behind a pile of pillows, or higher as a backrest for reading.

It isn't only for the bedroom

Hung above a built-in bench, a window seat or a sofa, a padded panel adds softness and warmth to a living room or a hallway nook.

Choosing a finish

Warm tan and saddle brown suit white and sand-coloured walls; dark brown and black read crisp and graphic against pale plaster. For a richer look, consider a brass rail; for something lighter, a slim white one.
